Applications Due April 25

The search for the next Mount Markham Central School District superintendent is garnering interest among applicants.


D.J. Shepardson, superintendent of Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES, conducted a one-hour session last week reviewing the method of the search.


He also took feedback on priorities from the three people in attendance.


Shepardson said, along with Mt. Markham, Waterville and VVS districts are also looking for a superintendent.


Some candidates, he said, could apply to more than one opening to see which district is the best fit.


Mt. Markham is conducting a confidential search. That means the candidates will not be known; the Board will work out a contract with the new superintendent and then introduce that person to the community.


Shepardson said that method usually draws a bigger pool of applicants.


It also avoids the negative impact of social media discussing candidates.


Shepardson, former superintendent of West Canada Valley, said some candidates might be looking for their first superintendent role. Others will come from smaller districts.
