CCS Team Back To States

Clinton Central School’s Science Olympiad team will again spend two days competing to be the top science school in New York state.


This year’s Science Olympiad is at LeMoyne College Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22.


Students in teams of two will compete in 26 science categories to solve problems and find answers.


Clinton has qualified for the state tournament for the past seven years. Each of the 26 categories earns points with the Top 10 for each one announced at the end.


The schools with the top scores will qualify for the national tournament.


This year Clinton has ten seniors participating in the Science Olympiad club.


Advisor Kathleen Washburn said that’s the highest number of seniors the CCS club has had at one time.


Clinton qualified after placing high enough in the regional competition. Some of their top points were earned in Experimental Design, Forensics and Codebuster.


This group of seniors has been involved in the club since eighth and ninth graders. They meet during a lunch hour each week together and then in teams to prepare for the competition.


Senior Esme Davis said while it’s a lot of work, the state tournament is fun. “We’re not going past states,’’ Davis said. “No pressure. We just go and do our best.’’


The seniors all intend to pursue a college major along the lines of science, such as biology, engineering and physics.
