Chenango Canal Built Up Region

Diane Van Slyke, Town of Madison Historian and member of Chenango Canal Committee, presented a very interesting program on the canal at the Greater Winfield Historical Society meeting Sept. 16 at the library.


This also included a video prepared by Colgate University students on this subject.


The Chenango Canal Committee is involved with restoring and preparing the

canal's towpath for recreational activities, including walking, snowmobiling, biking, skiing, etc. and maintains a small museum which houses mementos and articles regarding its construction and how it affected the area’s expansion.


The canal was built after the Erie Canal and served an area of 97 miles extending from Utica to Binghamton.


Its construction provided growth of villages along it and provided an easy method of transporting goods and passengers. ...
