Clinton Pool Facing Likely Closure

The Clinton Pool, a summer staple of the community since 1957, could well have seen its last swimmer.


Members of the Clinton Youth Foundation Board of Directors, which supervises the pool, had a forum last week to explain the dire situation.


To the 20 people who attended, Board members said they have exhausted all options they can think of to keep the pool going.


Sara Ziesenitz, president of the Board, said numerous grants were sought, but not awarded.


“The challenge is we don’t have permanent ownership,’’ she said. “The pool needs a complete overhaul and the bathhouse needs to be brought up to current standards.’’


When the pool opened 67 years ago, it was put on the grounds of Clinton Central School District. Then, and in the years since, the District has approved a temporary use agreement with the Youth Foundation.


CCS Superintendent Chris Clancy, who, along with Business Administrator Ethan Martin attended the meeting, said there is no possibility of

the District taking ownership of the pool.


Clancy also explained that selling the pool to the Foundation or any other entity would have to, by state law, be at a fair market assessment price.


Ziesenitz said repairs to keep the pool going, especially this past summer, have depleted funds.


Memberships have also dropped for less revenue than expected.


Even with the District helping with maintenance, Ziesenitz said more money has been spent in recent years than has been brought in.


Last summer’s equipment breakdowns in turn led to days the pool could not open, and the season ended earlier than usual. ...
