Temperatures this year provided good weather for providing top quality maple syrup and during the recent Maple Weekends people enjoyed tasting the result at Shaw’s Maple Products in Clinton and Ben and Judy’s Sugarhouse in West Edmeston. Plenty of pancakes hit the griddle at both places over four days of open houses and tours, plus breakfast served with plenty of maple syrup grown on the property. The slogan at Ben and Judy’s was Peace, Love and Pancakes. At Shaw’s it’s a non-stop duty to keep the boiler stocked with wood to boil down the sap. New York state has about 2,000 maple sugarmakers and produced 845,000 gallons last year. More photos, Pages 6 and 12.
