With some advice, a little singing and mostly no rain, the Mount Markham Class of 2023 celebrated their commencement and joined the ranks of alumni.
The outdoor ceremony Friday night began with a black cloud hovering over the turf and a high chance of rain. A lot of favors must have been called in because while downpours hit north and south, the school campus stayed dry until the 90-minute graduation ended.
Music and a slide show entertained those who came early to find a seat in the stadium; those running a little later stood or had the idea of bringing their own chairs. After the procession of Board of Education members, faculty, Hall of Fame inductee Chuck Chafee and the 75 graduates, Principal Victor Zampetti welcomed everyone and introduced salutatorian Abbie Ainslie.
Ainslie asked her classmates to look around them at the hills and beauty. “If you’ve grown up here we can count ourselves lucky,’’ she said, mentioning a number of favorite local things to do.
