A new mural in the City of Utica has a connection to Clinton.
Maria Vallese was commissioned to paint a mural on the side of Players Theatre in the city’s downtown. The mural is to celebrate Utica Monday Night’s 25th anniversary.
The project name is “A Tribute to Downtown Utica Theaters, Past and Present.” The mural was formally unveiled Tuesday.
Vallese, who has a studio through the tunnel on West Park Row in the Village, is known for her illustrations of area landmarks. She has also illustrated bottle labels for Saranac Brewery products.
Vallese said the founder of UMN reached out “with a concept of the mural. She was looking to showcase and create a tribute to the theaters in Utica from the early part of the century until about the 1950s and 60s,” Vallese said of the mural project.
After much research, nine downtown theaters were picked to be featured in the mural. “After we decided on the theaters, I did some mockup drawings of what the wall would look like painted. After a few rounds of revisions, we came up with the final concept and layout,” Vallese said.
She said each painted marquee will feature the address…
