New BCS Superintendent Settles in

Graduating from Richfield Springs Central School in the Class of 1988, Ron Pavlus knew his career path to follow.

In college he studied radio and television communications. That led to a job at WUTR for several years out of college, where he worked on commercials and other aspects of broadcasting.

One of those other duties involved talking to Junior High and High School students who came to the Utica station to learn about the profession. “I really enjoyed talking with the kids, giving them some advice and sharing what I knew,’’ Pavlus said.

Jane Flanagan, married to one of his co-workers, kept telling him he had a way with students and should consider becoming a teacher. She was a teacher at Mount Markham Central School and told Pavlus he’d be great with kids in the classroom.

“I enjoyed what I was doing but something kept tugging at me to consider a career change,’’ he said.

At the age of 30 he went back to college, the oldest student in his education classes at SUNY Oneonta. He kept working full-time while pursuing a degree in education.
