A new federal program can help people who are overdue on their water and sewer bills.
The Low Income Household Water Assistance Program will pay for water and sewer bills for financially eligible households. The program will pay up to $2,500 for drinking water or sewer bills overdue, or $5,000 if the bills are combined, per household.
Money is paid directly to the water and sewer providers. The program is for those with overdue bills.
To learn income guidelines per household, visit www.otda.ny.gov/LIHWAP. Applicants do not need to be the owner of the home.
The program began accepting applicants Dec. 1 and is using federal pandemic recovery funds.
Village of West Winfield residents can find out the status of their bills by calling Village Clerk Scott Van Duren by March 30. After that unpaid utility bills become part of the tax bill.
