Solar Project Explained

The Town of Winfield Board met Wednesday night to discuss new business.


The Board approved a resolution to accept the General Fund Claims and the Highway Fund Claims as presented after a short discussion. One exception was withheld from each claim.


The Board approved a resolution to accept the Supervisor's and Clerk's reports. The Board approved a resolution to accept the March 15 meeting minutes.


Josh Bennett of EDF Renewable Energy met with the Board to discuss the Columbia Solar Project. Including the Columbia Project, EDF Renewables is overseeing 14 different projects across New York state.


The project is expected to operate for 39 years.


Town of Winfield Supervisor Budd Osborn asked Bennett about the status of the solar cells after 39 years. Bennett said a majority of the solar cells would be recyclable and EDF is responsible for the decommissioning, removing, and restoring the property.


Bennett went through the environmental requirements of the project, the environmental benefit of the project, and how no pesticides or herbicides will be used to maintain the property. The project is expected to generate a positive economic impact for the local community, creating up to 300 jobs and several other tax and training benefits.
