A survey of the water pipes in the Village of Waterville’s system show some will need to be replaced.
At last week’s Waterville Village Board meeting, DPW Superintendent Jamie Bechy said most of the 658 water service pipes will meet the new state regulations.
The state has mandated that lead and galvanized pipes need to be replaced by the end of the next decade.
The inventory shows eight lead pipes on the village- owned side and 10 on homeowners’ side.
Thirteen pipes are unknown on the private side, mostly along Sanger Avenue.
Another 62 pipes on the public side are unknown.
Sixty-eight pipes are galvanized pipes and require replacement.
The survey will be put on the Village’s website with addresses indicating the status of the water pipes.
Letters will be sent to the property owners for the unknown and galvanized pipes.
Bechy said the DPW crew is continuing to dig to identify the status of the unknown pipes.
Pipes can be replaced with copper or plastic pipe.
The downside of plastic, Bechy said, is a leak cannot be detected by hearing it.
